By car
Via the B1053 / B1057 between Saffron Walden and Braintree. Allow time for rural roads from the M11 / A120. About 50–60 minutes from much of North London depending on traffic.
Parking
Parking is free on the streets around the green, but spaces fill fast on sunny weekends. The best bet is the small public car park on Stephen Marshall Avenue (CM7 4LZ), by the recreation ground. It has public toilets and a children’s playground, and the green is an easy five-minute walk away. We know of no parking charge, but check the signs when you arrive. Pub car parks are for patrons. Access & toilets
The church and Guildhall sit at the top of steep Church Hill, and the steps through the Guildhall archway come down straight onto the road. To avoid the hill and the steps, park in Vicarage Road: drive up Church Hill with the church on your right, take the first right just before the Three Tuns, then follow the path through the churchyard to the Guildhall. It’s a residential road, so please park considerately. The public toilets are at the car park on Stephen Marshall Avenue.
By public transport
There’s no railway station in the village. The simplest option is bus 49 (Central Connect) from Chelmsford, which stops by The Fox on the green. There are only a few buses a day, Monday to Saturday, with none on Sundays, and the ride takes about 1¼ hours. Check current times ↗. Finchingfield is also inside Essex County Council’s DigiGo ↗ on-demand minibus area. It can link you with Braintree station and bus interchange, and you book it through the TravelEssex app. DigiGo runs seven days a week, from 6am to 10pm on weekdays and 7am to 10pm at weekends, so you can still use it on Sundays, when bus 49 doesn’t run. It doesn’t run on bank holidays. Over Christmas 2025 there was no service on 25 and 26 December or 1 January, and it ran 6am–7pm on Christmas Eve. Last year’s festive hours were published in early December, so check TravelEssex before travelling over Christmas and New Year. From Audley End station, a taxi is the only option.
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings are calmer for photos. Summer weekends are busiest. Golden hour flatters the cottages; lavender season nearby is typically July to mid-August.
Winter visits
The village pond is really a widening of Finchingfield Brook, and after very heavy rain it can spill over the green. This happened in February 2014 and again in January 2021, when nearby roads were also under water. Visitor etiquette
It’s a lived-in village. Keep noise down, clear litter, respect residents’ homes, give ducks space, and support local pubs and tearooms.
