The interactive village museum in the c. 1470 Guildhall is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 2–4pm, from March to October, and entry is free (donations welcome). There are exhibitions, a family-history resource centre and bookable guided heritage tours, some listed through Historic Houses ↗. No further tour dates are listed at the moment; Historic Houses adds new ones to its Guildhall page when they’re scheduled. The museum is closed in winter, so this is the last month to visit until next spring.
The trustees of the 15th-century Guildhall run evening events to raise money for the building’s upkeep. Coming up: board and card games nights on Thursdays 22 October, 19 November and 17 December (a Christmas special), plus one in January 2027, 7–9pm, suggested £5 donation; a talk by Stephanie Callister-Jarrold of a Gestingthorpe charity that rescues injured and orphaned owls (Thursday 29 October, 7pm); an astronomy evening on the life cycle of stars and black holes (Friday 13 November, 7–9pm); and a Pre-Christmas Social with an arrival drink, canapés and live music from Ashley Bartlett (Saturday 21 November, 7–11pm, £25, or £26.95 with the online booking fee). Wonky Wheel’s makers’ market fills the 15th-century Guildhall with local artists, makers and craftspeople for a day of handmade gifts, homewares and art. This year it’s on Saturday 7 November 2026, 11am–4pm, a good excuse for an early-winter visit. Details from Wonky Wheel ↗
The war memorial on the green is the focus of the village’s Remembrance commemorations — a quiet, moving moment in the heart of the famous view. Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November in 2026.
Finchingfield Parish Council organises the village Christmas Fair and Christmas tree. This year’s fair is on Saturday 28 November 2026 on the village green, and the council’s plans include extra children’s activities, among them a disco. In 2025 it ran 12–3pm on Saturday 29 November, the same day the tree lights were switched on. Volunteers stood the tree in the village pond, and the council’s plans included Father Christmas arriving down the hill by sleigh and a grotto for children. The Fox on the Green, the Finchingfield Lion and the Three Tuns run quizzes, live music and special nights through the year. Finchingfield’s Grade II-listed post mill of c. 1756 — one of the oldest windmills in Essex — opens its doors on the third Sunday of each month, April to September, 2–5pm. Just turn up; numbers inside are limited, so you may queue briefly on busy afternoons. Details at Explore Essex ↗
On the national celebration of windmills and watermills, held on the second weekend of May, the post mill opened on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons in 2023 and 2026 (2–5pm). That’s a rare chance to see it two days running. The next National Mills Weekend is Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May 2027. Finchingfield Camping, just outside the village, has lavender fields and wildflower meadows. The lavender is usually in bloom from early July to mid-August, with ticketed visits opening in late June. The 2026 season has now finished and 2027 dates haven’t been announced yet. For 2026, the farm said tickets would go on sale in March. Visits are by pre-booked ticket only and daily numbers are limited. The wildflower meadow opens to ticketed visitors from late May, depending on the weather. On the Saturday night nearest July’s full moon, thousands of cyclists ride about 200 km (roughly 125 miles) through the night from London Fields to the Suffolk coast — and their route runs straight through Finchingfield. A gloriously daft, long-standing village tradition, usually held on a Sunday in mid-September: pairs tied together at the leg splash through the village pond and stop at all three of Finchingfield’s historic pubs along the way. On the green there’s a makers’ market, children’s races, food stalls and a dog show, all raising funds for village youth charity FinCHE. Back next September.
