Finchingfield sits in rural North Essex with a village green composition that has filled calendars, jigsaws and camera rolls for generations. In 2026 Essex Live and Love Exploring named it Essex’s prettiest village — ahead of Dedham and Thaxted — and Condé Nast Traveller featured it among the prettiest villages near London.
What makes it special
The famous view captures the pond, green, bridge, pastel cottages, church tower and — just beyond — one of Essex’s oldest post mills. It’s beautiful in every season, and still a real working village with pubs, tearooms, a post office and a friendly community.
And it runs deep. Finchingfield appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of the larger villages in England; the church tower has stood since about 1170 and the timber-framed Guildhall since about 1470. Lucien Pissarro came to paint the green in 1905, Dodie Smith of 101 Dalmatians fame lived and is buried in the parish, American airmen from RAF Wethersfield made the village pubs their local for forty years — and today chef Jamie Oliver calls Spains Hall home, while Olympic BMX champion Beth Shriever grew up on these lanes.
